Compassion

Compassion is one of the Four Virtues in Buddhism next to Loving Kindness, Equanimity and Sympathetic Joy.

Compassion is the emotion that we feel in response to the Suffering of others that motivates a desire to help. Compassion includes Sharing, Empathy and Caring.

Buddhism teaches that Compassion is one of the two qualities to obtain Enlightenment. The other quality is Wisdom. If we understand ourselves through Wisdom we can really understand others and be compassionate. Compassion is an aspiration, a state of mind, wanting others to be free from Suffering.

You should Practice Compassion actively by:

  • Understanding the nature of Suffering through Wisdom; and
  • Giving Loving Kindness towards other living beings.

Be very honest to yourself when it comes to Compassion. Many people do something for someone else because they feel obliged to do so. This 'superficial Compassion' consumes energy. Instead of helping the other you both end up worse off. Cultivate Love towards yourself in order to be able to radiate your Love to the other as well, Practice your Compassion.

Have Compassion and understanding for those whose negative conditioning have made them difficult and unpleasant. The divine spark is within them, just as it is with everyone.

Compassion and Love are not a luxury. Without Compassion and Love humanity cannot survive. If you want others to be happy, Practice Compassion. If you want to be happy yourself, Practice Compassion.
